Soundbars and subwoofers

A flat television has nowhere to put a decent speaker, which is the whole reason this shelf exists. The choice comes down to channel count: the LG S40T and Samsung HW-B450F are 2.1CH bar-and-subwoofer sets, the Hisense HS3100 is a 3.1CH with a dedicated centre channel, and the LG SNC4R is a 4.1CH that brings wireless rear speakers with it.

How to choose

If the complaint is that dialogue disappears under the music, the centre channel of a 3.1 set is the fix. If you want sound behind you as well, the 4.1 with rears is the one, provided the room has somewhere sensible to stand them. Otherwise a 2.1 bar and its subwoofer do the important part of the job, which is getting the sound out from behind the screen.

  • 2.1CH, 3.1CH and 4.1CH sets from LG, Samsung and Hisense
  • One HDMI lead into the TV's ARC socket, or optical on an older set
  • Wireless subwoofers still need a mains socket where they stand
  • Keep the bar in front of the screen, not shut inside a cabinet
