Hot plates at Night Owl

The hot plate here is the Geepas GHP32023: one sealed cast plate, one control knob, one plug. It is the burner you set on the counter when the stove is already full, and often the only burner in a bedsit, an office pantry or a room where gas is not an option.

How to choose

Single or double is the first question, and it is really a question about how you cook — a second plate only helps if you regularly run two pots at once. A solid cast plate takes a minute or two to reach temperature and then holds it steadily, so you turn it down earlier than you would a gas ring. Match the pan base to the plate: a base that overhangs wastes heat and can warp.

  • A single sealed plate that runs off an ordinary wall socket
  • Cast plates hold their heat once hot, so turn down early
  • Use a flat pan base sized to the plate, not wider
  • Let it cool before wiping; spilt milk and sugar bake onto a hot surface
