Countertop machines, not plumbed ones. Hisun covers 1.1L, 2.2L and 2.5L reservoirs with the YTE002A, YTE005A and YTE006A, and Sonifer adds the SF-6522 and SF-6532. You fill the tank by hand, switch on, and the machine drops a basket of ice every few minutes until the basket is full.

How to choose

Reservoir size is the number that matters, because it sets how long the machine runs before somebody has to fetch water. A 1.1L tank suits a household that wants ice for the evening; 2.2L and 2.5L keep a cafe counter or a party supplied. Ice melting in the basket drains back and refreezes, so nothing is wasted — but the ice is only ever as clean as the water you poured in.

• Hand filled: no plumbing, no drain line, no installation
• 1.1L for a home, 2.2L and 2.5L for cafes and gatherings
• Melt water returns to the tank and freezes again
• Drain and dry the tank if the machine will sit unused
