What separates a good toaster from a bad one is even browning across the slot and how easily it empties. Pull the crumb tray out and check it slides cleanly, because crumbs sitting under the elements are what make an old toaster smoke. Then give the dial two or three tries with the bread you actually buy: the setting that suits a thin slice will scorch a thick one.
