Description
Ensure Plus is Abbott’s high-protein adult nutrition powder, sold in India as a Food for Special Dietary Use for adults with undernutrition. Each 1 kg jar contains two sealed 500 g foil pouches and gives you about 18 servings. A standard serve is 55 g of powder — six scoops — stirred into 190 ml of water to make 231 ml, and Abbott’s recommended intake is twice a day.
On the numbers, the powder provides 430 kcal and 19 g of protein per 100 g, which works out to roughly 236 kcal and 10.4 g of protein in a standard 55 g serve. The protein is a blend of sodium caseinate, whey protein concentrate and soy protein isolate. Alongside it the formula carries fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) as a prebiotic at 3.52 g per 100 g, plus the vitamins and minerals Abbott counts as 29 vital nutrients — among them calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, selenium and the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E.
Abbott markets Ensure Plus around three claims printed on the pack: recovery, muscle health and immune function. The recovery claim is footnoted to significant recovery in BMI, weight and energy intake versus control after 12 weeks of supplementation with 2 serves per day in undernourished Indian adults, and the muscle claim to significantly greater improvement in hand grip strength versus control over the same period in adults at potential nutrition risk. The immune claim rests on 11 immunity nutrients in the formula.
The vanilla powder mixes with plain water rather than milk, and it is suitable for people who are lactose intolerant — though it is not lactose-free, it does contain milk and soy, and the pack carries a “not for use in galactosemia” warning. It is vegetarian and gluten-free by nature.
Storage is worth noting: once a foil pouch is opened, use its contents within three weeks. Keep the pouch folded and stored in a cool, dry, hygienic place — do not refrigerate the powder. Made-up drink should be taken promptly, or covered, refrigerated and used within 24 hours.
