Extension Cords at Night Owl

Extension cords and trailing sockets: a run of flex, a moulded plug and a block of outlets, usually switched and sometimes with surge protection built into the strip.

This page has nothing to order from it just now. Two decisions do the work. Buy more cable than the gap needs, because a strip that only just reaches gets tugged out of the wall, and buy more sockets than you count today, since a full strip invites a second one chained behind the sofa. Anything that heats — an iron, a kettle — belongs in a wall socket on its own.

  • Switched outlets kill standby draw without unplugging anything
  • Surge protection guards electronics, not motors
  • Never chain one strip into another; run a longer cord instead
  • Check the flex rating before plugging in a heating appliance
