Sewing machines

A household sewing machine takes on the jobs that are slow by hand: hemming trousers, taking in a dress, running up curtains, patching a school uniform before Monday. Mechanical models select stitches on a dial and have less to go wrong; electronic ones add a small screen, a longer stitch list and finer speed control.

For repairs and straight seams, a straight stitch, a zigzag and a buttonhole cover nearly everything, so a long stitch list rarely decides it. Look instead at what comes in the box, since presser feet, bobbins and needles are what you run short of.

  • Mechanical dials or electronic stitch panels
  • Straight stitch, zigzag and buttonhole cover most jobs
  • Bobbins and needles are the first things to run out
  • A convertible arm helps with sleeves and cuffs
