Philips Essential Hair Straightener - HP8321

The Philips HP8321 is the Essential straightener, and the specification that does the most work here is plate length.

At 28 × 100 mm these are long plates, and that changes how the tool behaves. More hair passes between them on each stroke and contact is maintained along a greater length, so a section is straightened in fewer passes. Fewer passes means less cumulative heat through the hair, which is the real determinant of condition — not the temperature number on the box.

The plates are tourmaline ceramic, chosen because they glide. A straightener that drags or snags is what causes breakage, so the surface matters more than most buyers realise. At 210 °C it has the heat for a proper salon-style finish that holds rather than relaxing out by lunchtime.

It heats up in 60 seconds, which is the difference between a tool you use and one you skip because you are in a hurry. A key-lock holds the plates closed for storage — worth using, because scratched plates snag — and the swivel cord stops the cable twisting as you work around your head.

One thing to be clear about: this model runs at a single styling temperature rather than offering a choice. That keeps it simple and it suits most hair. If you have fine or fragile hair and want a gentler option, the BHS375 in the 3000 Series offers 180 °C alongside 220 °C and is the better fit.
